Christoph's Tesla and the castle thru the doors.jpg

Paint, tour, relax, sketch, stroll, shop, taste, sip and more as we explore the beautiful Midi-Pyrenes and Lot regions of France

We will begin our exploring by spending the first two days in the port city of Bordeaux. Bordeaux is filled with 18th century architecture and was listed as a world heritage site by the UNESCO in 2007 as well as being the wine industry capital of the world.  In addition to learning about Bordeaux wine, we will also explore the city, visit several of the many museums, savor the local market, lounge in the cafes and more, as well as paint and sketch and relax.

On our 3rd day, we will take off with our wonderful driver/guides, Christoph Kusters and his wife, Sorissa, in their Tesla and their new Mercedes van.  We will travel through the countryside to the village of Martel which will be our home for the remainder of our tour. We will stay in a charming B & B that was once a girls school. You will find things to paint and sketch in every corner of the fabulously restored grouping of historic buildings.  In addition to exploring the town we will be able to experience the delights of two farmers markets that take place in Martel  on Wednesday & Saturday.

Some of the other locations we plan to visit to during our stay:

St Emilion, an area with an exceptional landscape devoted entirely to wine-growing, and containing many fine historic monuments and townscapes.   We will explore the underground of St. Emilion including the monk Emilion’s cave which conceals a fertility chair, already renowned for its effectiveness. We will also explore the town and its uniques shops which contain the work of local artists and craftspeople as well as bakeries, cafes and more. This area is heaven for wine lovers!  We will visit some of the best wine chateaux in the world. Even if you are not a wine drinker you will enjoy painting the historical chateaux, touring them and enjoying their landscapes and gardens.

We will explore two of the amazing prehistoric caves in the Lot region.   The Gourdon cave is noted for its mass of stalagmites and stalactites, known as soda straws.  We'll also visit the Cougnac cave nearby known for it's paintings featuring wounded human figures, and for its strange abstract symbols.. In addition, the cave contains paintings of animals (ibex, megaloceros, mammoth), as well as a fingermarks in red and black pigments.

We will visit the village of Loubressac which is classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages of France'.  This village is set on a rocky outcrop surrounded by woods and open fields. Loubressac is one of those rare villages that are still able to evoke another time and place, we will stroll through its  narrow streets and alleys of ancient house, stopping to sketch what inspires us.

Imagine yourself strolling down this street in Carennac.

Imagine yourself strolling down this street in Carennac.

Carennac is another village we will explore.  Carennac is designated one of "the most beautiful villages of France."  The lovely houses in Carennac are made from the local white-yellow stone and the single lane bridge entering the village adds further to the charm. Many of the houses feature ornate windows and other interesting architectural features. Most of the houses date from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Autoire is also on our itinerary. It is where you can appreciate 16 and 17th century houses built in the local honey coloured stone.  The main square in the centre of the village is magnificent with a lovely fountain.   Around the edges of the square the lovely stone houses are simply charming.  There are several castles and a manor house to see, including the Chateau de Limargue

Brentenoux is known as the village with 7 towers.
